Seal Island, located 6 kilometers to the west of St Ives, is one of the places that you can visit when you take a boat ride. Here you will find a colony of Grey Atlantic Seals, and the island is a rocky outcropping near Zennor. The placement of the Island protects these seals from predation, and the harsh elements of the Atlantic Ocean.

Since the 1930’s visitors have been coming to this island, and the seals are used to seeing boats coming to the island. You can book a trip from St Ives Harbor, which will take you to other interesting points on the harbor  such as The Island, St Ives Head, Porthmeor Beach, Tate Gallery, a collection of cliffs and sheltered coves, before you head west, and all the way to Seal Island.

For 15 to 20 minutes, you will get to see the seals, as soon as you reach the island. As the boat swings astern in the small inlet, you will have an undisturbed view of the seals laying in the sun, or swimming in the sea. The seals may be 20, or 2, in number, but you will always get to see a few which for many people is a once in a lifetime experience.

You may also get to see other marine wildlife mingling with the seals. Whales, Dolphins, Porpoises, and basking sharks do come to the island to join the seals. The full duration of the trip to Seal Island will take about an hour.
